Chapter 16

Brooks

The driveway to Emryn’s parent’s house winds up the side of a mountain. Nerves settle in my stomach as I take the curves like the daredevil teenage boy I once was. I used to drive up this mountainside at top speed to get to Emryn quicker. It’s nice to have that feeling of excitement back again.

One final curve and the house comes into view, a log cabin with windows that take up most of the house. My eyes settle on the wrap-around porch where a lone figure sits on the swing, and I recognize Emryn’s dad sitting there.

If I hadn’t been feeling like a teenage boy before, I am now.

The week I got my license, I bought a beat-up truck. You could see the ground in parts of the floorboard, but I only gave seven hundred dollars for it. It was mine, and I had bought it on my own. I was proud of that thing. At that point, Emryn and I had been official for a while, but I had never taken her on a proper date. I couldn’t afford much, but I loaded up a picnic, jumped in my truck, and made my way to her as fast as possible. When I pulled up in the driveway, Jonathan was sitting on the swing, waiting for me like he is now. He’s intimidating, especially considering my father was nothing more than a drunk. When I stepped out of the truck that day, my legs were visibly shaking. He met me on the steps and asked me to sit a while before Emryn came down.

Saying no was not an option. I thought I would get one of those speeches about making sure his daughter made it home safely—all my friends had gotten a version of their own from their girlfriend’s dad.

That night, he sat me down and asked about my life. He was interested in knowing me and my future, not because I was dating his daughter, but because he was interested in me.

I’d been around him plenty of times, but aside from the day of my mother’s funeral, I’d never let him get too close. This was the first time I let him get to know me.

Because of my dad, I had always found Jonathan off-putting. I couldn’t understand his sincerity. That night, though, I wanted him to trust me to take his daughter out, so I let him in. Looking back, I can honestly say that decision saved my life. He filled a gap my dad couldn’t.

When I pull to a stop and round the corner of my pickup, just like that day twelve years ago, he rises off the swing and meets me on the steps.

The words that leave his mouth when I’m standing on the stairs below him nearly have my knees buckling out from under me.

“I’m proud of you.”

Sincerity shines from his eyes, and I have to clear the emotion out of my throat before responding.

“What for, sir?” I ask.

He studies me a moment before he claps me on the back and says, “You’re trying, and that’s all anyone can ask for.
